Shady & Smart: A Sun Safety Celebration

June brings plenty of sunshine—and the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about two important health observances: Cataract Awareness Month and Cancer From the Sun Month. While these may sound like separate concerns, they actually go hand in hand. One of the leading causes of cataracts is sun exposure, and we all know that too much time in the sun can also lead to skin damage or even skin cancer.

This month, consider combining both observances into a fun and educational sun safety program for your residents!

Plan a “Smart in the Sun” Event

Host a relaxed, informative gathering that focuses on simple ways residents can protect their eyes, skin, and overall health from harmful UV rays.

Your event could include:

  • A short presentation or handout about cataracts, skin cancer prevention, and hydration tips

  • A quick demo or table showing the best types of sunglasses or wide-brimmed hats

  • Games or a trivia wheel with sun safety facts and prizes

If your budget allows—or if you can partner with a local pharmacy, clinic, or wellness organization—you could even provide:

  • Sunglasses (look for UV-protection labels)

  • Sunscreen samples

  • Hats or visors

  • Water bottles to promote hydration

Even if you can’t provide freebies, just encouraging residents to bring their own hats and reusable water bottles can make it feel festive and fun.

Keep It Going All Month

If you want to keep the theme going beyond a single event, try these ideas:

  • Post weekly Sun Safety Tips on your bulletin board or in the office

  • Share a hydration challenge or encourage residents to track their daily water intake

  • Host a “Best Summer Hat” contest for residents and post their photos

Education That Sticks

Many residents may not realize that eye protection is just as important as sunscreen, especially for older adults who are more at risk for cataracts. This program is a great opportunity to start conversations about wellness, prevention, and self-care in a fun and approachable way.

By highlighting both Cataract Awareness Month and Cancer from the Sun Month together, you’re not only doubling the value of your programming—you’re also helping your residents take simple, meaningful steps to stay safe and healthy all summer long.
