Make the Most of June: Easy Outdoor Activities for Your Community
June is Great Outdoors Month, the perfect time to soak up the sunshine and enjoy outdoor fun before the summer heat kicks into full gear. Whether you have beautiful outdoor space on your property or want to help residents connect with the local community, this month is filled with simple ways to encourage outdoor activity, social connection, and wellness.
Bring the Outdoors to Life On-Site
If your property has green space, a playground, picnic tables, or even a shaded sidewalk, use it to your advantage! Plan low-cost, high-fun events that help residents step outside and make the most of the season.
Here are some themed days to build events around:
June 2 – World Bicycle Day: Organize a casual community ride or host a bike safety and repair station.
June 4 – Global Running Day: Promote a group walk or jog around the property or nearby trail.
June 6 – National Drive-In Movie Day: Set up an outdoor movie night using a projector and invite residents to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
June 13 – National Weed Your Garden Day: Turn it into a “Garden & Gather” social hour—residents help spruce up landscaping and enjoy cold lemonade together.
June 18 – International Picnic Day / National Go Fishing Day: Host a picnic lunch in a shaded area or plan a group outing to a nearby fishing spot.
June 21 – International Yoga Day: Invite a local yoga instructor for a morning outdoor session.
June 26 – National Bomb Pop Day: Hand out icy treats like Bomb Pops, watermelon slices, or popsicles to kids (and kids at heart!).
Even simple gestures like a weekly “pop-up popsicle cart” or “fruit under the tree” event can create moments of joy and encourage residents to linger and connect outdoors.
Connect Residents to Local Outdoor Opportunities
You don’t have to host everything yourself. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to ask about free community events, summer concerts, or farmers markets you can promote on-site. Post flyers in your office or laundry rooms, or include them in your monthly newsletter.
If you’re near a state park, lake, or nature preserve, stop by their visitor center and ask for brochures or park maps you can display in your leasing office. Many parks offer free entry days, guided hikes, or junior ranger programs for kids that your residents may not know about.
Keep It Fun, Keep It Simple
Remember, Great Outdoors Month doesn’t need to be complicated. Focus on encouraging residents to step outside, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the season. Even just providing cold drinks under the shade or organizing a community “walk and talk” morning can be enough to spark smiles and sunshine.
