When Your Body Needs a Deep Breath
Last weekend I spent a few days in Broken Bow, Oklahoma with family.
The cabin was tucked among the trees with a quiet lake just steps away. Every morning I woke up before the kids, poured a cup of coffee, and sat outside listening to the birds while the sun filtered through the trees.
For a little while, everything felt slower.
Then the kids woke up.
The peaceful silence turned into laughter, fishing, paddleboards, kayaks, and the kind of joyful chaos that comes with making memories together. Even then, something about being surrounded by nature made it easier to breathe.
As I drove home, I realized I hadn't just enjoyed a vacation. I had experienced a reset.
It reminded me how easy it is to spend our days moving from meeting to meeting, email to email, task to task without ever giving our minds and bodies a chance to slow down.
The interesting thing is that a reset doesn't always require a long weekend away.
Sometimes it begins with five deep breaths before opening your inbox.
Sometimes it's a fifteen-minute walk outside during lunch.
Sometimes it's stretching between meetings or choosing calming music for the drive home.
Those small moments tell our bodies, "You're safe. You can slow down."
As leaders, we often think about taking care of our teams, our families, and our responsibilities. Taking care of ourselves deserves a place on that list too. Sustainable leadership begins with healthy habits that support our mental wellness, reduce stress, and help us lead with greater clarity and intention.
This week, I'm asking myself one simple question:
What helps me feel restored?
I'd love to hear your answer.
What's one small habit that helps you reset during a busy week?
